The advantages of 3D mammography
There are two types of screening mammography—2D and 3D. At our practice, we provide 3D mammography. Here are the advantages that 3D offers over traditional 2D tests.
- Reduces the number of callbacks to patients requiring further testing
- Offers better breast cancer detection for patients who have dense breast tissue
- Detects more breast cancer than 2D tests
When to have screening mammograms
Our doctors and advanced practitioners work with patients to determine when they should begin having screening mammograms, and when they should stop having the test. It’s a patient-centered approach to breast cancer prevention and annual wellness. Here’s what to expect.
- If you are 40 or older and have an average risk of developing breast cancer, our providers will recommend a screening mammogram, to be repeated every year.
- If you are 75 or older, your provider can have a conversation with you about whether to continue having screening mammograms.
- If you have a higher risk of developing breast cancer, our providers will develop a breast cancer prevention strategy that suits your needs.
Things to know about screening mammograms
When you talk to your scheduler, tell them if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have implants. Also let them about any recent vaccinations. Here are a few tips for a better mammogram.
- Don’t wear body powder, lotion, perfume, deodorant or antiperspirant.
- Wear a skirt or pants, so you only need to remove your top for the test.
- Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen before the screening exam to help with pain.
- Don’t schedule your test during a time of the month when your breasts are very tender.
After the test, if your results are normal, you will receive a letter. If the radiologist sees something suspicious, our office will contact you to schedule diagnostic mammograms, ultrasound imaging or other tests.
Screening mammograms are a critical part of your preventative care plan. We encourage you to schedule an appointment for a 3D test. We are ready and willing to assist you with questions about your care, so please do not hesitate to CONTACT US AT 563.355.1853.
